University of North Texas Joe Greene Hall & Welcome Center

Location: Denton, TX

Architect: Jacobs & Mackey Mitchell

Client: University of North Texas

Size: 120,000 SF Residence Hall | 20,000 SF Welcome Center

The University of North Texas (UNT) engaged Coleman & Associates to work simultaneously on Joe Greene Residence Hall and the adjacent Welcome Center, both sharing an entry plaza and lawn. The plaza design emphasizes university branding elements while providing a welcoming, contemporary focal-point space that highlights university culture for prospective students and other campus visitors. The project included conceptual design and installation of UNT selfie signage and a custom pavement design showcasing the UNT mascot. The design also accommodates circulation routes for campus tour trams and ample gathering space for special events in a compact area with substantial grade change.

The landscape design for Joe Greene Hall specifically was focused on offering a number of outdoor lounging areas. A large courtyard with seating areas for dining or socializing is shaded by umbrellas and trees, including the preserved Heritage pecan trees.. An activity lawn with viewing nooks encourages students to mingle in the fresh air and enjoy recreational activities. There is ample bike storage and wide paths to connect to other university buildings. Project scope also included custom hardscape, landscape and irrigation.
