AISD Norman-Sims Elementary School

Location: Austin, TX

Client: Kirksey

Site Area: 70,000 SF

LEED Silver Certification

Originally built in 1969 with 2 subsequent additions, the Norman-Sims Elementary School needed to consolidate the existing buildings by building a modern structure for future students. As part of the 2017 AISD Bond, this new school has revitalized the educational experience in East Austin. The colorful building is accented by moveable outdoor furniture that provides bright pops of color in the fitness space. The aptly named Discovery Porch leads into the Discovery Pavilion, providing a flexible space for indoor-outdoor learning and cultivating innovation.

The 10-acre campus received additional improvements including upgraded play equipment and areas, additional parking to meet code, and enhanced entry drives, carpool lanes, and bus lanes. The project was designed to and received LEED Silver certification from the United States Green Building Council, a testament to the sustainable features that were integrated into the site. Coleman & Associates scope included Schematic Design through Construction Observation.
