SMCISD Rodriguez Elementary School
Location: San Marcos, TX
Client: Perkins & Will
Site Area: 12.5 Acres | 93,700 SF
Rodriguez Elementary School was designed to expand the educational experience for students and, by extension, to create a central community center. With capacity for 660 students, Rodriguez is prepared to handle the growing population of San Marcos and alleviate overcrowding of nearby schools.
The 12.5-acre site, of which over half was retained as open green space, is located adjacent to a suburban neighborhood park. Shared public spaces are incorporated throughout, including an expansive front lawn and community event center. Outdoor learning opportunities provide a connection to nature and incorporate wellness spaces. A 12,000-gallon cistern collects water for use by the community garden. The outdoor experience extends indoors as well, with the interior design drawing inspiration from the natural landscape of San Marcos. Coleman & Associates provided landscape architecture services from schematic design through construction observation, including City of San Marcos permitting.
